Summary

There was a contagion in the very air that blew from that haunted region; it breathed forth an atmosphere of dreams and fancies infecting all the land。

Featuring 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow' and 'Rip Van Winkle', this collection of inspired essays, stories and sketches established Washington Irving's reputation as one of America's foremost authors。 Irving's timeless characters, including Ichabod Crane, Rip Van Winkle and the headless Hessian trooper, jostle for space alongside 31 equally atmospheric and lyrical works in this haunting anthology from one of America's most distinctive literary voices。

I bought this book quite a few years ago, when Jack and I spent a couple of days exploring the Hudson River above NYC。 Now that I've finally read it, I will warn you that the title of this book is misleading。 The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip van Winkle are two of just three stories in this book。 The rest is made up of essays, mostly describing his travels in England--a sort of reverse Alistair Cooke。It was pleasant reading , and Irving definitely wrote very well, but I found that, for example I bought this book quite a few years ago, when Jack and I spent a couple of days exploring the Hudson River above NYC。 Now that I've finally read it, I will warn you that the title of this book is misleading。 The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip van Winkle are two of just three stories in this book。 The rest is made up of essays, mostly describing his travels in England--a sort of reverse Alistair Cooke。It was pleasant reading , and Irving definitely wrote very well, but I found that, for example, reading 18 pages on the environs and church of Shakespeare's Stratford-on Avon made me wonder why i wasn't reading something more compelling。 。。。more

Liked it, but not all of it。 The Legend of Sleepy and Rip van Winkel were the most enjoyable。 However, I recommend buying them separately if that's all you want to read。 Still fun tho! Not sure if this is the right version of the several stories but I liked Pride of the Village, Heartbreak, The Wife and a few others。

I don't know how I have lived 26 years on this Earth, and my path has only crossed with Washington Irving's writing until now。 Better late than never, but I mourn the time that I did not spend reading his stories。 They're lyrical and poetic, and I could easily find myself transported into the setting, as if I was experiencing it myself。 Every time I read a new one, I was blown away by how much I fell desperately in love。 Not everything aged well, and there were a few stories that were pretty off I don't know how I have lived 26 years on this Earth, and my path has only crossed with Washington Irving's writing until now。 Better late than never, but I mourn the time that I did not spend reading his stories。 They're lyrical and poetic, and I could easily find myself transported into the setting, as if I was experiencing it myself。 Every time I read a new one, I was blown away by how much I fell desperately in love。 Not everything aged well, and there were a few stories that were pretty offensive to indigenous peoples, but I do feel like that chalks up to the time period this was written。 Not excusable, but explainable。 I will definitely be reading this again, or at the very least rereading my favourites, throughout the rest of my life。The Voyage: 5 stars。 The highest a short story collection has ever started for me! I think I’m going to like this collection a lot。Roscoe: 4 starsThe Wife: 5 starsRip Van Winkle: 5 stars。 I used to have a picture book version of this as a child。 The full short story feels so familiar yet new。English Writers on America: 4 starsRural Life in England: 3。5 starsThe Broken Heart: 4 starsThe Art of Bookmaking: 5 starsA Royal Poet: 3。5 starsThe Country Church: 4 starsThe Widow and Her Son: 2。5 starsA Sunday in London: 3。5 starsThe Boar’s Head Tavern, East Cheap: 2 starsThe Mutability of Literature: 5 starsRural Funerals: 4。5 starsThe Inn Kitchen: 5 starsThe Spectre Bridegroom: 5 stars。 I think The Spectre Bridegroom might be the most perfect story that has ever been written。Westminster Abbey: 4。5 starsChristmas: 3。5 starsThe Stage Coach: 3 starsChristmas Eve: 3 stars。 Would have been lovely to read actually during Christmas, but alas, the stars did not align。Christmas Day: 4 starsThe Christmas Dinner: 3 stars。 I really liked how the last three stories were all connected, but I was also ready to move on。London Antiques:Little Britain: 5 starsStratford-on-Avon: 5 stars。 This one in particular was amazing at making you feel like you were actually there with both the author and Shakespeare。 Also, it made me miss it terribly, although I visited it once a decade ago。Traits of Indian Character: 2 stars。 I think Irving was trying to defend indigenous people, but it didn't really come across that way。 Definitely one of the stories that didn't age well。 Philip of Pokanoket: 2 stars。 More harmful depictions of Native Americans。John Bull: 3 starsThe Pride of the Village: 3 starsThe Angler: 4 stars。 Trust Washington Irving to make even fishing sound poetic。The Legend of Sleepy Hollow: 5 giant, full stars。 What a phenomenal story。 It's perfect in every way。L'Envoy: A bit of a strange one to end off after the titular story。 。。。more

Beautifully written and appropriately old-school spine chilling。

BELLO mi è piaciuto, avevo visto il film e mi era piaciuto e il libro, seppur diverso, è stato una piacevole scoperta, anche se non ricordo quasi nulla degli altri racconti ups

Mostly a review of “The Sketch-Book of Geoffrey Crayon” in which we find Irving’s two most well known stories。 I’ll get to the other writings eventually but figured I’d write a review now。 I enjoyed this edition’s introduction giving context to Irving and his writings; mainly, how important he was to establishing American literature as it it’s own, and putting fresh in my mind the recency of the American revolution when these works were written。 The “Sketch-Book” itself is a collection of storie Mostly a review of “The Sketch-Book of Geoffrey Crayon” in which we find Irving’s two most well known stories。 I’ll get to the other writings eventually but figured I’d write a review now。 I enjoyed this edition’s introduction giving context to Irving and his writings; mainly, how important he was to establishing American literature as it it’s own, and putting fresh in my mind the recency of the American revolution when these works were written。 The “Sketch-Book” itself is a collection of stories and travel writings written from a fictional narrator named Geoffrey Crayon, as he leaves America and travels to Europe。 I found most of the entries entertaining, and besides “。。。Sleepy Hollow” and “Rip Van Winkle,” I particularly enjoyed “The Voyage,” and “The Mutability of Literature。” Would recommend if you happen to find this in a Goodwill for $3 like I did。 Might learn a thing or two about America along the way。 。。。more

Perhaps a hidden gem in The Spectre Bridegroom:“What a lamentable situation was that of the poor baron! What a heart-rending dilemma for a fond father, and a member of the great family of Katzenellenbogen! His only daughter had either been rapt away to the grave, or he was to have some wood-demon for a son-in-law, and, perchance, a troop of goblin grandchildren。”

I might just be negative haha。 Didn’t like any of the stories really they were all pretty boring。 The one I enjoyed the most was The Devil and Tom Walker followed by The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle。 The rest not worth mentioning。But I love this cover!

J’ai dû lire cette nouvelle pour les cours mais j’ai apprécié l’atmosphère sombre et mystérieuse comme dans nouvelles fantastiques d’Edgar Poe。

This is a great collection of short stories, it's a classic for a reason it provides insight into American culture so I think I understand it much better now。 The stories are not too scary but they hold your attention and make you want to read more。 I will definitely read more stories by Washington Irving。 Longer review soon ish。 This is a great collection of short stories, it's a classic for a reason it provides insight into American culture so I think I understand it much better now。 The stories are not too scary but they hold your attention and make you want to read more。 I will definitely read more stories by Washington Irving。 Longer review soon ish。 。。。more

I really enjoyed many of the stories in this collection, including a couple of the stories that I had previously read。 There were a number of stories which did not really appeal to me as much as the others, though。 Most of the tales that Irving writes about that take place in New York with all the old Dutch characters and influence, I really enjoyed。 Many of the other stories were set in Spain, Germany, or other parts of Europe, and they lacked something。 Since he was from New York, it makes sen I really enjoyed many of the stories in this collection, including a couple of the stories that I had previously read。 There were a number of stories which did not really appeal to me as much as the others, though。 Most of the tales that Irving writes about that take place in New York with all the old Dutch characters and influence, I really enjoyed。 Many of the other stories were set in Spain, Germany, or other parts of Europe, and they lacked something。 Since he was from New York, it makes sense that the stories he wrote that took place in those areas he actually lived in or visited would have a more realistic mood or feel to them。 His strongest writing conveys a real mood with his words, a kind of creepiness or eeriness that his tales set in Europe, for the most part, do not seem to contain (although there are a few exceptions。)It’s in his power of description, the way he uses words to create the proper mood, that his writing draws its strengths from。 I often found myself walking away from reading some of the stories with my mind still set in a kind of mood that was in the story I had just read。I also found his writing, early to mid 19th century prose, to be fairly easy to read, much more so than say ,Dickens or even James Fenimore Cooper, a contemporary of Irving’s。 This is the first of three books in the genre of horror that I’m reading as part of this year‘s reading challenge。 Just about every one of this book’s stories involves a ghost of some kind, and those that do not – for example, what is probably his most famous story, Rip van Winkle - there is an element of the macabre to it, a sensation of uneasiness throughout much of the story that creates such a strong mood as I’ve described。 。。。more
